What is LNG?

What are the advantages of LNG?

LNG takes up a much smaller fraction of space than natural gas. In areas where geologic conditions are not suitable for developing underground storage facilities, it has provided the opportunity to store natural gas for use during high demand periods.

Six hundred cubic feet of natural gas turns into just one cubic foot of liquid gas. This allows it to be transported over long distances in specially designed tankers, to import terminals. The real advantage is that LNG can be imported from other countries around the world - expanding and diversifying North American natural gas supplies.

LNG alone cannot meet North America's growing energy demands. However, along with developing local energy resources, it can be an integral component of the world's energy future.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), costs of liquefying, transporting, and re-gasifying LNG have fallen significantly during the past 20 years, promoting growth in the LNG market.
